Don't run off to Real Ron

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Denis Law has told Cristiano Ronaldo he can achieve all his ambitions at Old Trafford.

The 42-goal Portuguese winger’s future is in doubt — with Real Madrid declaring an interest and doing their best to unsettle him.

But former Stretford End hero Law predicts a glittering future for Alex Ferguson’s current United squad and feels Ronaldo will want to be a part of it.

The Lawman had a largely unhappy spell playing on the Continent with Italian club Torino and knows the grass is not always greener.

He said: “You’ve just got to look at what he’s done here at Manchester United and ask yourself, ‘What’s the point in him going to Real Madrid?’

“He’s just won the Champions League and back-to-back titles, so why go anywhere else?

“He’s at the most famous club in the world, who are not done with winning trophies.

“They may have won a double this year but they’ll be winning again on a regular basis. So if Ronaldo wants to be a winner, he’s got to be staying here.

“It has happened that players have left United and done OK but invariably they don’t.

“They mainly go away when they are past their best. But, for Ronaldo, United is where he is and where he should be.”

Law, 68, was speaking at the unveiling of a new statue at Old Trafford — the ‘United Trinity’ comprising him, George Best and Bobby Charlton.

Their United side could not build on the European Cup triumph of 1968 and were relegated six years later.

Talking 40 years to the day since the club’s 4-1 win against Benfica in the final at Wembley, Law added: “This United team has the experience of winning the European Cup and of playing so many games together.

“There’s no doubt they will win it again. I feel United will dominate in Europe. I’ve seen teams from Italy and Spain and they’re not in the same class.”

Ronaldo, 23, threatened to pass Law’s United record of 46 goals in a season at one point — but he did beat Best’s tally of 32, the previous best by a winger.

Charlton, 70, refused to be drawn on Ron’s future but said: “We have a fantastic club. At the moment it’s as good as it gets.

“Everything Matt Busby wanted is here now. In Alex Ferguson we’ve got continuity and we have some marvellous players.”
